El Paseo Marítimo: donde la ciudad se encuentra con el mar

Oct 4, 2019

The Paseo Marítimo (Promenade) by Carlos Ferrater and Xavier Marti of OAB is a colorful esplanade built along West Beach in Benidorm, Spain. The promenade is not meant to be a border, rather a transition where the city meets the sea.

Designed as a dynamic space, the esplanade suggests different walking paths that provide a scenic view of the beach while providing multiple areas where people can sit and enjoy the rich landscape of Playa de Poniente, without any architectural limitations.

The ceramic paving tiles used on the esplanade were developed in collaboration with the Institute for Ceramic Tile Technology and produced by Keramia Cerámica. Their design was inspired by Arab ceramic tile heritage, and Benidorm’s colorful culture. The different changing colors along the promenade highlight the different sections of the town.

The promenade was built in three layers that aim to blend the modernism, the fractal shapes of nature, the latest construction technology and leading edge landscape architecture. The first layer finished in white concrete is the base and creates the edging line.  The second layer weaves together the different colors of tiles that define the promenade. The final layer adds ambiance to the promenade with seating areas, plants, and other natural finishes.

The Paseo Marítimo has given the seaside town a new profile that plays with light and shadow. A set of sinuous lines woven into each other to illustrate the various spaces and take on different natural and organic shapes, mimicking the movement of the sea against a cliff.
