Tile of Spain announces the winners of the 14th Annual Tile of Spain Awards in the categories of Architecture and Interior Design. On November 27th the jury for the Tile of Spain Awards, presided over by architect Victor López Cotelo, met in Castellón Spain to select the winners.

First prize in the Architecture category went to a multipurpose pavilion with a ceramic screen. For the Interior Design category, the judges awarded first place to a cocktail bar. Honorable mentions were also awarded.

Winners ARCHITECTURE category

The judges decided to award first prize to the project entitled “Pabellón Docente Polivalente Escola Gavina“ by Carmen Martínez Gregori, Carmel Gradolo Martinez and Arturo Sanz Martínez. The jury valued the simple and efficient architecture of this multipurpose pavilion and how it uses ceramic tile to solve problems of acoustic conditions and light control. The way in which tiles were used balances the relationship between the indoor space and the surroundings.

An Honorable Mention went to “Parking Saint Roch” by Archikubik(Miguel Lacasta, Marc Chalamanch, Carmen Santana). The jury determined that using ceramic tile in such a singular and systematic way as a visual sunlight filter was extremely clever.

Winners INTERIOR DESIGN category

First prize was awarded to the project entitled “Blue Wave Cocktail Bar” by Equipo Creativo.The judges were impressed by the interesting exploration and application of ceramic tile without sacrificing technique or functionality. The installation is right on target to create a festive and unique look in the space.

Honorable Mentions were awarded to two projects in the Interior Design category:

• “Restaurante Disfrutar,”also from El Equipo Creativo, for the “interesting work in exploring with ceramic materials and its applications.
• “L’Atic Vernacle“from El Fabricante de Espheras for “the simplicity and preciseness in the selection of materials to achieve a comfortable living space.”

Winners in the FINAL DEGREE PROJECT CATEGORY

The Tile of Spain Awards also includes a category to acknowledge the best Graduate Project presented by students of Schools of Architecture highlighting the use of ceramic tile in their projects.

The jury awarded first prizeto the project “Transient Refurbishment” by Laura Alonso Blascoof the ETSA School of Architecture in Madrid. “For her profound knowledge of the material, beginning with technique and experimental process of ceramics.” Special attention is given to the development of the work and the process to obtain the best products in regards to esthetics and how to best integrate the material in their projects.

Honorable Mentions also went to the following:

• “Paseo Marítimo de Mataró“ by Hector Durán Sánchez from the University in Girona, for showing ceramic tile as the ideal material not only for its practical use but to capture the ambiance of the place.
• “Archaeological Center in the Alhambra” by Agustín Gor Gómez(Architectural School in Granada) and “A story of integral rehabilitation, recreating a landscape that never was” by Jorge Borondo Pérez-Gómez (San Pablo University CEU Madrid). The jury valued both projects in accuracy and quality and the way its approach in relation to the background.

More than a decade of Tile of Spain Awards

The Tile of Spain Awards, now in their fourteenth edition, enjoy widespread acknowledgement in the world of architecture, undoubtedly attributed to their brilliant trajectory to date. Both the prestige of the various juries and the standard of the winning projects, have earned these awards, organized by ASCER, a consolidated reputation on the Spanish and international architecture scenes.

Once again the Tile of Spain awards relied on an exceptional jury. The president, Architect Víctor López Cotelo, was recently distinguished with the 2015 National Architectural Award. The remaining jurors: Laura Andreini, co-founder of the Archea Associati Studi; Portuguese architect, Marcos Cruz; the renown interior designer, Isabel López-Vilalta; Juan Domingo Santos, architect and professor of the ETSA in Granada; Edgar González, renown editor in the field of architecture; and architect Ramón Monfort.

The Tile of Spain Awards includes two main categories, Architecture and Interior Design, each offering cash prizes of 17,000 Euros each. The Final Degree Project category for graduating students of architecture awards winners with 5,000 Euros each.
