During this year’s annual Coverings Installation & Design (CID) Awards, special recognition in the International category was awarded to Hotel Kimpton Los Monteros by EL EQUIPO CREATIVO. Located in the vibrant city of Marbella, Spain, the newly updated Kimpton Los Monteros Marbella blends the glamour of the hotels 1970s origins with the energetic essence of Andalusia. Drawing inspiration from the region’s natural landscapes, artistic heritage and Mediterranean spirit, the hotel’s design integrates lush greenery, extensive use of ceramic tile and various hand-painted murals to create an artistic environment that honors Marbella’s history and culture while offering guests a stylish and modern experience.

This project involved the complete renovation of all the public spaces in the hotel with the goal of curating a new identity for this historic property while respecting its local heritage and architectural roots. One of the key requirements of the renovation was to incorporate the existing 1970s architecture into the new design, elevating its functionality while simultaneously creating a unique, experience-driven atmosphere aligned with the Kimpton brand.

With a strong focus on cultural storytelling and architectural integrity, the creative team’s concept was guided by the landscapes, colors and textures of Andalusia. Paying homage to Marbella’s natural environment and artistic legacy, the project focused on a palette of greens, blues and warm earth tones, as well as materials such as wood, ceramic tile and hand-painted murals, celebrating Spanish craftsmanship and artists.

Embracing the original 1970s architecture, the architects preserved and repurposed the geometric patterns, built-in niches and filtered-light elements. Aesthetic appeal and functionality were carefully considered for each space of the hotel, utilizing Mediterranean whites, bold retro furnishings and curated artwork to curate a welcoming atmosphere.

Another key element of the design was functional zoning. Adjustable privacy levels in lounges and the flexibility of each space were intentionally planned to meet guests’ evolving expectations for versatility and intimacy. For example, the lobby, lounges and library feature sliding wood elements that allow spaces to be opened or closed as needed.

Featuring an immersive blue theme and dynamic artistic elements, the Azul Bar stands as its own separate destination. With a unique multi-level layout, Escondido, the rooftop bar, maximizes views while the retro-inspired details create a seamless transition from day to night. Outdoor areas were also redesigned to enhance both comfort and visual impact. The Costa Club Pool Bar and Jara Restaurant extend concepts to the exterior by integrating terracotta tones and Andalusian tile patterns.

Ceramic tile was utilized as the primary flooring material throughout the lobby and adjacent circulation areas, reinforcing the hotel’s the chic Mediterranean aesthetic. A porcelain tile collection inspired by classic hydraulic mosaics was selected, providing a highly decorative pattern while delivering the durability and mechanical resistance required in a high-traffic hospitality environment.
